Hello, my name is Derrick Vernon. I am originally from Memphis, TN. I grew up a few minutes from Graceland, as well as within walking distance of the Lorraine Motel where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. I was born into a racially charged climate in 1973 by a black mother, suffering with bi-polar disorder, and a white father, whom I never met. As winter's chill starts to wrap around us, it’s a time to dig deep into our closets. We look for our warmest coats, scarves, gloves, and blankets. While we prepare to stay cozy, it’s crucial to think about those in our community who lack these essentials.
